Angamaly Railway Station

The Angamaly Railway Station is located in Angamaly town, Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala, India. It is located about 25 kilometres from Ernakulam Town and 10 kilometres from the Aluva stations. The railway station comes under the Shoranur-Cochin Harbour section which is a high density railway strip in Kerala and is operated by the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division of the Southern Railway Network. The railway strip that connects the whole of Kerala to the rest of India is the brainchild of the Maharaja of Cochin, Rajarshi Rama Varma (1853 – 1932). Kochi was initially left isolated from Malabar. The Maharaja proactively headed detailed conversations with the Resident of the British Empire since 1862 to establish the railway line. The project was sanctioned in 1899 however, the state was asked to fund the expenditure for the railway lines. The state invested a surplus reserve of 4.4 million rupees, however due to a fund crisis, the Maharaja sold personal ornaments from the royal family and 14 gold nettipattams (traditional handcrafted gold elephant head covering) of the royal elephants and sacrificed huge portions of family land to fund the project. The net investment was 7 million rupees after the project was completed. The railway strip was initially managed by the Madras Railway company and later on handed to the Southern India Railway Company after 1907. The railway strip has been successfully functioning since 2nd June 1902 and has proven to be a lifeline to the economy of Kerala as it connects the state via rail to other parts of the country, India.

Angamaly Railway station is an important halting point for many an express trains and all the passenger trains passing through Angamaly. The famously proposed Sabarimala Rail Line will be starting from the Angamaly Railway Station and hence will provide easy rail access to the Hindu pilgrimage centre of Sabarimala.
