Slipped disc

Slipped disc, also known as Spinal disc herniation is a condition that affects the spinal cord. It occurs due to a tear in the ring that lies between adjacent vertebrae. This ring forms a mixture of white fibrous tissue and cartilaginous tissue also known as fibro cartilage which holds the vertebrae together. This ring allows appropriate movement of the spine and acts as a shock absorber. When this ring is damaged, the central soft portion of the spine bulges out giving rise to continuous lower back and neck pain, discomfort, numbness or a tingling feeling, paralysis etc. due to one or more causes like heavy weight lifting, genetic factors like obesity, sprain, trauma etc.

Ayurveda explains the condition as a result of an imbalance in the Vata and the Kapha dosha. The extensive research and study carried out by our specialist at Green Gram Wellness Village concludes that the aggravation created due to an imbalanced Vata dosha (ailments related to body parts like the waist, lower back, hips, the large intestine etc.) affects the body sites that form the Kapha doshas (the joints, stomach and small intestine) and increased dryness (also called ruksha guna) due to water content reduction in the affected areas further intensifies the condition. This imbalance could be triggered by one or multiple of the many reasons mentioned above. We, at Green Gram Wellness Village, plan a detailed healing programme for the patients suffering from slipped disc. It is imperative that there is a balance of all the doshas to bring about improvement. Hence, we carefully plan ayurvedic medication and therapies, necessary dietary changes and exercise routine.

  1. Ayurvedic Therapies – At Green Gram Wellness Village, we pick our herbs and prepare herbal preparations carefully to treat our patients. Our preparations like the Churna have always proven beneficial to aid proper digestion. Our various preparations possess anti-inflammatory, anti-septic and healing properties and we prescribe them depending on the condition along with our effective ayurvedic therapies. We would carry out one more a combination of the following therapies depending on the severity of the condition.

    1. Kati basti – Kati Basti involves treating the affected area with warm herbal oils by retaining the mixture of oils in a particular location on the body. For this, we, at Green Gram Wellness Village, prepare smooth and elastic wheat dough. We make the patient lie down on their stomach on a wooden bed and place the wheat dough snugly around the area that is to be treated on the back. The wheat dough acts as a dam like structure so that the oil can be retained in that area. We then pour a concoction of carefully chosen warm herbal oils inside this dam made of dough. We take care to maintain the temperature of the oil to help reduce stress, rigidity in the spine and also assist in strengthening the bone tissue.

    2. Sneha Vasti – Sneha Vasti is a process of Ayurvedic enema. At Green Gram Wellness Village, we pay close attention to maintaining hygienic conditions for the patients. So we ask the patient to take a warm water bath before beginning the process of Sneha Vasti. We make necessary arrangements to ensure the patient is comfortably lying down on a cot with one thigh folded and the second extended. The mixture of oils required for this process is a concoction of carefully chosen oils from our 22 years of research and experience in the field. The specialist applies some oil to the rectum area and introduces a lubricated enema nozzle filled with our medicated herbal oils into the rectum very carefully and skillfully while massaging the abdomen. We let the patient lie comfortably till the oils are expelled from the system. We observe the patient and advise food intake accordingly.

    3. Kashaya Vasti – Kashaya Vasti is an ayurvedic enema technique. We, at Green Gram Wellness Village, prepare a mixture of herbs, rock salt, honey and oils and pour it in a leather sac and heat the sac by immersing it in hot water. We then tie the sac carefully to a vastiyantra (an instrument used to carry out enema). At this stage, we have the necessary oils and the instrument ready to carry out the process of enema. We always make arrangements to ensure the patients are comfortable prior to and during the process and ask the patient to lie down on his back while our experienced specialist introduces the herbal mixture via the instrument carefully and skillfully into the anus of the patient. We allow the patients to continue lying down comfortably till they experience an urge to pass stool. Post a clear bowel movement, we request our patient to take a warm water bath and consume digestible food.

    4. Abhyangam – Abhyangam is a traditional full body oil massage. At Green Gram Wellness Village, the oil that we prepare is mixture of ingredients that brings about holistic healing. We apply this mixture of oils on the patient’s body and massage the patient for a few minutes. Our oil relaxes the muscle stress, nourishes the skin and the body and reduces bone and joint pain.

    5. Navarakizhi – This method required preparing bundles of rice in muslin cloth and soaked in medicated herbal oils. At Green Gram, we prepare our oil mixture by carefully choosing ingredients and oils that the patients will benefit more from. We massage and scrub the rice bundles soaked in our medicated oils all over the patient’s body. This technique treats joint related conditions, balances vata dosha, promotes perspiration and further detoxifies the body.

    6. Pizhichil – In this therapy we pour our herbal medicated oils in continuous streams on the patient’s body and massage the body. The oils we choose at Green Gram help improve the blood circulation, clean clogged pores, promotes detoxification, reduce joint paint, hydrate and nourish the body and strengthen the immunity.

  2. Diet – At Green Gram we always make sure that a healthy balanced diet is included in the menu to neutralize the adverse effects of the doshas. We use ingredients that have anti inflammatory, anti-septic and healing properties. Hence, ingredients like turmeric, black pepper and foods that are fat free and easy for digestion are extensively included in the menu.

  3. Exercise and physical activities – We recommend regular walking to all the patients. Yoga asanas can also help reduce the pain and discomfort caused by this condition. Asanas like Makarasana (the crocodile pose), Advasana (reversed corpse pose), Jyestikasana (superior pose), Matsyakridasana (flapping fish pose), Bhujangasana (cobra pose) are some of the asanas that help reducing the discomfort and aid healing.
